On November 24, during a bike ride along Russia’s frigid Ufa River, Belka’s owner, a 59-year-old man, succumbed to an accident when the brittle ice beneath him gave way, sending him plunging into the freezing waters.
According to The Sun, a Good Samaritan attempted to rescue him but was overwhelmed by the river’s strong currents, narrowly escaping with severe frostbite.

In an emotional video shared by RT on X (formerly Twitter), Belka is shown unwaveringly refusing to leave the spot where her owner perished. Despite efforts from rescuers and bystanders to take her home, she continues to return to the ice, steadfastly waiting for her owner to come back.

A multi-day search operation was organized to locate the man, during which rescue crews discovered his bicycle and later, tragically, his body in the Ufa River downstream. Kirill Pervov, head of the rescue service in Bashkiria, mentioned that “search work was complicated by difficult conditions – a strong current and unstable ice crust.”
Belka’s Enduring Loyalty: A Comparison to Hachiko
Since the incident, Belka has been an ever-present figure on the ice, demonstrating her loyalty even amidst ongoing rescue operations. Her story has drawn comparisons to the renowned Akita dog, Hachiko, who waited at Japan’s Shibuya Station for his owner for nearly a decade.
