Sharwood the Dog: A Heroic Journey in Canine Blood Donation
In a remarkable display of loyalty and service, Sharwood the Gordon Setter completed his 40th and final blood donation at Northampton Vets4Pets on July 13, 2023. This milestone makes Sharwood the first dog in the UK to reach 40 blood donations, a notable achievement celebrated by Pet Blood Bank UK.
Transitioning to Retirement: The End of an Era
Following his historic achievement, Sharwood will officially retire as a donor, as he approaches the age limit of eight years for canine blood donors. A statement from Pet Blood Bank UK noted, “Sharwood’s 40th milestone also saw him retire as a donor.”
Since 2017, Sharwood has dedicated his service to helping other dogs in need, all while being supported by his devoted owner, Sue Mitchell.
A Lifesaving Legacy: The Impact of Donations
During his tenure as a blood donor, Sharwood has contributed an astounding total of 22.5 kg of blood, saving the lives of approximately 380 dogs. One of those dogs is Sizzle, a Dachshund with hemophilia, whose owner, Emma Gray, expressed heartfelt gratitude, stating, “Without Sharwood and his lovely owner Sue, our dog Sizzle would simply not be here today.”
Celebrated Achievements and Proud Owners
“We are one very proud charity right now,” said Pet Blood Bank UK, emphasizing the incredible contribution of Sharwood. Sue Mitchell shared her pride in Sharwood’s achievements, declaring, “As the owner of Sharwood, I am immensely proud of him reaching this incredible achievement. His first donation was in 2017, and he has successfully donated on every visit since then!”
Continuing the legacy, Sharwood’s son, Brinjal, has already donated 12 units of blood and is set to carry on his father’s admirable work. Mitchell noted, “Sharwood is the third of my dogs who has regularly donated to this wonderful charity. I am so proud of them for all the lives they have helped to save.”
The Mitchell Family’s Remarkable Contribution
According to Pet Blood Bank UK, the dogs owned by the Mitchell family have collectively donated over 97 units of blood since the arrival of their first donor, Garner, in 2015. Pet Blood Bank’s Marketing Manager, Nicole Osborne, stated, “Canine blood donors and their owners are the hidden helpers of the veterinary world. Their donations help ensure that lifesaving blood is always available for any vet that needs it, and Sharwood has gone above and beyond in his contributions to this cause.”
Farewell to a Canine Champion
After years of dedicated service and saving countless lives, Sharwood is now on his well-deserved retirement. His legacy will undoubtedly inspire future canine blood donors and their owners to continue this vital work.
