On November 8, 2024, the American Humane announced K9 Bo as the winner of the 14th annual American Humane Hero Dog Awards. Dr. Robin Ganzert, President and CEO of American Humane, expressed enthusiasm about Bo’s recognition, stating:
“We are so excited to name Bo as American Humane’s latest Hero Dog, a distinction that is well-deserved for him and his handler David.”
K9 Bo’s Training and Early Career
K9 Bo began his journey with the Gastonia Police Department in April 2023, undergoing rigorous training before officially starting his duties in October 2023. Since then, Bo has demonstrated extraordinary capabilities in scent tracking, becoming an invaluable asset to the police force.

Bo’s acute sense of smell has led to numerous successful missions, including:
- Locating an elderly dementia patient.
- Finding an 11-year-old autistic child who had gone missing.
- Tracking a seven-year-old child abducted at knifepoint—his most notable case to date.
As reported by American Humane, Bo exhibited exceptional skill during a cold January night in 2024 when he tracked a missing elderly patient for miles under harsh conditions, ultimately leading to a safe recovery.
