The Positive Impact of Dog Interaction on Brain Function: A Swiss Study

Research Findings on Petting Dogs and Brain Activity
A recent study conducted by researchers at the University of Basel in Switzerland has unveiled significant findings about the effects of petting dogs on brain function. According to the research, engaging in physical interaction with dogs can notably increase brain activity in the frontal cortex—a vital area responsible for regulating attention, working memory, problem-solving, and emotional responses.
Study Insights from Lead Researcher Rahel Marti
Rahel Marti, the lead author of the study and a doctoral student specializing in clinical psychology and animal-assisted interventions, elaborated on the research focus. “We chose to investigate the frontal cortex because this brain area is involved in several executive functions, such as attention, working memory, and problem-solving. But it is also involved in social and emotional processes,” said Marti in an email.
The Therapeutic Potential of Animal Interaction
Marti asserted that this study adds to the growing body of evidence supporting the beneficial effects of animal-assisted therapy. According to her, such interactions can enhance mental, emotional, and cognitive functions, especially in individuals experiencing deficits in motivation and social functioning.
“If patients with deficits in motivation, attention, and socioemotional functioning show higher emotional involvement in activities connected to a dog, then such activities could increase the chance of learning and achieving therapeutic aims,” she explained.
Study Methodology and Outcomes
The study involved participants who interacted with a puppy while undergoing brain scans. Initially, participants observed the dog from a distance before gradually approaching and petting the animal. Researchers later had them engage similarly with a stuffed animal. The findings demonstrated stronger brain activity during interactions with the live dog compared to the stuffed counterpart.
The Significance of Therapy Animals
This research underscores the importance of therapy animals, showcasing their superior ability to stimulate cognitive and emotional growth in humans compared to non-living substitutes. The implications for mental health therapy and emotional well-being are profound, emphasizing the role of canine companionship in enhancing overall quality of life.
