Arizona Humane Society Rescues Senior Dog from Canal: The Heartwarming Story of Dorothea
The Arizona Humane Society (AHS) recently shared an “incredible story of resilience and survival” involving a senior dog named Dorothea, who was rescued from a shopping cart in the middle of a canal. This remarkable event took place on June 16, 2023, thanks to the collaborative efforts of AHS and the Phoenix Fire Department.
The Rescue Operation
According to a news release from AHS, the rescue was initiated after a Good Samaritan spotted the distressed dog. “AHS Dispatchers were alerted to a dog in distress by a Good Samaritan who spotted her stuck in the middle of a canal laying on top of a shopping cart,” the organization reported.
Rescuers employed a ladder and specialized equipment to successfully bring Dorothea to safety. AHS noted, “the sweet senior pup was all tail wags when she was finally ashore.”
Video Captures Dorothea’s Plight
AHS shared a poignant video of Dorothea just moments before her rescue, showcasing her dejected demeanor atop the shopping cart, seemingly losing hope. Online commentators expressed their distress, with one Facebook user remarking, “Someone probably placed that sweet baby on there on purpose thinking it was funny and then couldn’t get him back. Poor baby.”
Medical Assessment and Recovery
Following her rescue, Dorothea received a thorough medical evaluation aboard AHS’s Pet Ambulance. The assessment revealed she was “dehydrated, hungry, covered in ticks, and a bit stinky from the canal water.” She was promptly given food, water, and a much-needed bath.
Despite her challenging circumstances, Dorothea was found to be in relatively good health apart from a few minor injuries and some dental issues requiring attention. AHS noted that throughout her month of treatment, which included a spa day, Dorothea proved to be a “sweet, loving girl who enjoyed cuddles and attention from humans.”
A Heartwarming New Beginning
Despite the dire conditions under which she was found, Dorothea made a full recovery and now enjoys a happy life with her forever family in Youngtown, Arizona. Her dramatic turnaround has touched many hearts, with one Facebook user reflecting, “Being older it makes me wonder if someone dumped her, I really hope not. Happy life beautiful Dorothea! You held onto hope and now have a beautiful life ahead.”
