Zosia the Therapy Dog: A Heartfelt Tribute to Iowa’s First Police Station Canine

On December 2, 2023, Iowa State University Police Department (ISUPD) announced the passing of Zosia, the first therapy dog to work at a police station in the state of Iowa. Zosia, a beloved Golden Retriever, crossed the rainbow bridge, leaving a profound impact on the community she served.

Background of Zosia

Originally born in Poland, Zosia spent her formative years at Iron Hill Retrievers in Delmar, Iowa. Following extensive training, she began her journey as a therapy dog in October 2017.

A Commitment to Service

“Zosia began volunteering at multiple organizations in Story County and warmed the hearts of many,” the ISUPD shared on their social media. By March 2019, she officially took on the role of a therapy dog for the ISUPD, directly aiding community members during times of need.

Zosia dedicated more than five years to the ISUPD before retiring in May 2023. Her service days were marked by her comforting presence in various situations – from responding to crisis calls and visiting classrooms to supporting individuals battling mental health challenges.

A Lifetime of Love

As stated by the ISUPD, “The majority of her time was spent comforting individuals working through mental health related concerns.” Her duties also included:

  • Responding to crisis calls
  • Visiting classrooms and residence halls
  • Facilitating mental health trainings
  • Welcoming students during orientation

“She loved on people so well,” reflected Kinsey Hauser, Zosia’s owner and ISUPD’s Mental Health Advocate Supervisor, in a tribute to the dog’s generous spirit. “It didn’t matter who you are or what you’d gone through; she loved everyone the same.”

A Legacy of Parenthood

In addition to her therapy work, Zosia was known for being an exceptional mother. The ISUPD noted that she had several litters of puppies, many of which were donated to service dog organizations.

Remembering Zosia

Zosia is survived by her owner, Kinsey Hauser, her grandson Zebediah, and her great-granddaughters, Sydni and Lena. ISUPD expressed their sorrow in a heartfelt message, stating, “Zosia will be profoundly missed, fondly remembered, and forever cherished.”

Her legacy lives on not only through her descendants but also in the continued commitment to service by the Iowa State University Police Department.
