New Bedford Fire Department Comes to the Rescue of Wandering Animals

On October 30, the New Bedford Fire Department in Massachusetts experienced an unexpected and heartwarming incident when a dog and three goats were found roaming freely near one of their fire stations.

Discovery of the Goats and Dog

Around 4:00 PM, firefighters from Engine 5 noticed a mother goat with two baby goats walking along Acushnet Avenue, accompanied by a dog, possibly a St. Bernard. Concerned for their safety, the firefighters sprung into action to assist the wandering animals.

Swift Action Ensures Animal Safety

According to the Fire Department’s social media update, a nearby neighbor, who was walking his own dog, helped by providing a leash for the mother goat. The firefighters were able to walk the mother goat into Station 5, with her kids following closely behind.

  • The dog was also secured by the accommodating neighbor.
  • Once inside the fire station, the mother and baby goats were kept safe while awaiting assistance from Animal Control.

Return to Safety

The New Bedford Fire Department later reported that the goats were placed in a fenced area behind the station until their owner, who resides just a short distance from Station 5, came to reclaim them.

In a post celebrating the successful rescue, the Fire Department expressed appreciation for the assistance of both Engine 5 members and the neighbor, posting, “Great work members of Engine 5 and the gentleman who assisted, you’re the G.O.A.T!”

Community Reaction

Social media users reacted positively to this amusing incident. Comments included one from a Facebook user who remarked, “What a funny and wonderful story to read first thing in the morning. Great work firefighters at Station 5!”

Another user jokingly suggested that the goats were trying to participate in early Halloween fun, stating, “Goats were just trying to get in on that trick or treating a day early so they get the good stuff!”

Questions Remain About the Accompanying Dog

While the three goats successfully returned to their owner, many social media users expressed curiosity about the dog’s safe return, as the Fire Department did not provide an update on its status.

As the community reflects on this light-hearted encounter, hopes are high that the furry friend also reached home safely after its spontaneous adventure through town.
