West Highland Terrier Rushed to Vet After Ingesting Marijuana During Beach Walk

An alarming incident unfolded on July 27 in Sheerness, Kent, England, when Stephen Davidson, a 59-year-old dog owner, rushed his eight-year-old West Highland terrier, Oscar, to the veterinary emergency room after he displayed concerning symptoms following their usual beach outing.

Unusual Behavior Raises Concerns

Davidson noticed a marked change in Oscar’s behavior shortly after their walk. Typically described as “loveable and clingy,” Oscar became lethargic and showed a disinterest in drinking water. Concerned for his pet’s health, Davidson feared Oscar “could have dehydrated and died.” Acting swiftly, he took Oscar to an emergency veterinary clinic.

Staggering Revelation at the Vet

At the veterinary clinic, Davidson was stunned to learn that Oscar had ingested marijuana, leading to his unusual behavior. “They put something down his throat to see if he would gag straight away, but he didn’t – there was a delay. That’s when they said he’d been drugged,” Davidson explained.

Treatment and Recovery

To detoxify Oscar, he required an overnight stay at the veterinary hospital where he was administered IV fluids and charcoal medication to help eliminate the marijuana from his system. Fortunately, Oscar has since made a complete recovery and returned to his familiar, affectionate self.

Safety Concerns for Dog Owners

Despite Oscar’s recovery, Davidson expressed worries about the safety of their usual walking route, which is 20 minutes from their home. He noted the prevalence of drug use in the area, stating, “It’s so bad in this town. People are just smoking it anywhere and then they throw it on the ground.”

Davidson has also issued a warning to fellow dog owners in the vicinity: “I just want people to be extra careful of what their dogs pick up and be aware of any dangers when walking them.”

Recognizing Signs of Marijuana Intoxication in Dogs

Dog owners should be vigilant for signs of marijuana intoxication in their pets. Symptoms may include:

  • Wobbly or uncoordinated movements
  • Excessive sleepiness
  • Disorientation
  • Dilated pupils
  • Excessive drooling
