Dog’s Orbeez Mishap Highlights Pet Safety Concerns
A recent viral TikTok video has captured the attention of millions, showcasing an unfortunate incident involving a dog and a dangerous toy: Orbeez beads. The digestive issues that ensued have raised awareness about the potential hazards these colorful beads pose to pets.
Viral TikTok Video Draws Millions of Views
The video, shared by TikTok user @larenmciaren, has amassed over 70 million views and 6 million likes. In her post, she humorously remarked, “Just another day in the ER,” while confirming that the footage was posted with the dog owner’s permission. The dog, named Orion, was taken to Animal Urgent Care (AUC) in Arvada, Colorado, after consuming a significant amount of Orbeez.
Emergency Vet Visit and Surgery
In an official statement, AUC shared that the x-ray revealed Orion had ingested a considerable quantity of Orbeez beads, noting, “As Orion has quickly learned, Orbeez are NOT the kind of rainbow that a dog should taste!” Surprisingly, the colorful beads only represented about 25% of what Orion consumed. The remainder had to be surgically removed due to potential intestinal blockages, which Orbeez can cause.
The Risks of Orbeez and Pet Health
Orbeez are known to expand when hydrated, posing a serious risk to animals if ingested. According to AUC, the vet staff stated, “He ate a LOT. A whole dry bag of Orbeez. And they literally hydrated in his GI tract.” This can lead to severe health problems, including:
- Intestinal blockages
- Pancreatitis
- Liver damage
- Seizures
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reported that between 2018 and 2022, nearly 7,000 emergency room visits were linked to incidents involving water beads like Orbeez.
Orion’s Journey to Recovery
Fortunately, Orion is now on the mend after undergoing surgery. In a follow-up comment on TikTok, @larenmciaren reassured viewers, “Accidents happen, and dogs are quick y’all! He needed surgery to remove the rest, but he’s on the road to recovery.” AUC also emphasized that Orion was recently adopted and is now in the care of loving pet owners.
Conclusion: Keeping Pets Safe from Harmful Toys
This incident serves as a reminder to pet owners about the potential dangers posed by toys like Orbeez. While they may seem harmless, these toys can lead to serious health issues for pets. Always supervise playtime, and consult a veterinarian if ingestion occurs. Stay informed and ensure your furry friends are safe while enjoying their playtime.
