Pima Animal Care Center Introduces ‘Foster for Five’ Program to Support Large Dogs
The Pima Animal Care Center (PACC) has announced a new initiative to combat space challenges in their shelter while providing a more comfortable environment for their dogs. Beginning October 18 and running through November 3, the ‘Foster for Five’ program offers financial incentives to those willing to foster large dogs for two weeks.
Incentives for Fostering Large Dogs
According to the PACC, individuals who foster a dog weighing 40 pounds or more will receive $5 a day for up to two weeks, allowing them to earn a maximum of $70. Furthermore, participants will receive a free crate for the dog, generously supplied by Petco Love, an organization dedicated to animal welfare.
Program Goals and Outreach
Monica Dangler, director of the Pima Animal Care Center, explained the motivation behind this program, stating, “We’re aiming to reduce stress for our dogs in the shelter and send 150 dogs to foster homes starting this Friday.” This outreach is not only designed to alleviate overcrowding but also to improve the well-being of shelter animals.
Who Can Participate?
Residents of Pima County aged 18 and older are eligible for the foster incentive. This initiative addresses the urgent need for foster homes in the community and encourages residents to consider temporary care for shelter dogs.
The Benefits of Fostering
Dangler expressed optimism regarding the program’s impact. She stated, “I’m so grateful that we have partners willing to assist us in creative ways to incentivize fostering.” She believes that experiencing the joy of fostering will resonate with participants, stating, “You really can’t put a price tag on the joy of helping an animal in need.”
Alternative Ways to Support PACC
If fostering is not feasible, PACC encourages community members to help in other ways, including:
- Donating supplies or funds
- Spreading the word about adoption opportunities
- Keeping pets safe and cared for
- Volunteering time at the shelter
- Participating in pet support projects
PACC emphasizes that even short actions can significantly contribute to their mission, stating that these efforts can “make a huge impact without taking a pet home.”
The Importance of Reducing Shelter Stays
Research has demonstrated that prolonged stays in shelters can induce severe stress among dogs, with many suffering health declines due to their situations. The ‘Foster for Five’ program not only aims to expedite the adoption of these animals but also ensures they lead healthier lives during their shelter stay.
