Study Reveals Dog Owners More Likely to Believe in Love at First Sight

A new study conducted by Talker Research for The Honest Kitchen has provided compelling insights into the emotional bonds between dog owners and their pets. The research found that an impressive 87% of dog owners in serious relationships are more inclined to believe in the concept of “love at first sight” with their dogs rather than with fellow humans.

Key Findings from the Survey

The study surveyed 2,000 dog owners currently in serious relationships, yielding several noteworthy statistics:

  • 80% reported feeling an “instant connection” with their pet.
  • Only 69% expressed the same sentiment about their partner.
  • 19% indicated that forming a bond with their dog took time, with 20% questioning their decision to adopt due to the lack of an immediate connection.

The Importance of Developing a Relationship

Despite initial struggles, many dog owners find the journey worthwhile. Approximately 74% feel that the bond they cultivated with their dog over time is stronger than an instant connection. This reflects the idea that love can grow deeper through shared experiences and commitment.

Respondents Share Adoption Insights

The survey also inquired about what potential dog owners wish they had known before adopting. According to Talker Research, many responses centered around feeding practices:

  • A significant 76% of respondents consider food their dogs’ “love language,” emphasizing their commitment to providing high-quality nutrition.
  • Others mentioned the “true investment of time” involved in dog ownership, likening it to raising children.

Interestingly, a common response was the realization of the immense joy dogs bring, with many stating, “If I had known the amount of joy they bring, I would have gotten one sooner.”

Pet Ownership Exceeds Expectations

The survey highlighted that 83% of dog owners found their pet ownership experience to be better than anticipated. Furthermore, despite acknowledging the challenges, an equal number of respondents affirmed their commitment to pet ownership, stating they wouldn’t change their experiences for anything.

Miki Dosen, Chief Marketing Officer at The Honest Kitchen, reflected, “There’s so much to look forward to when you have a dog, but we wouldn’t be honest if we didn’t acknowledge how hard it can be, too.” She added, “At the end of the day, it’s the full experience — both highs and lows — that makes it one of the most meaningful relationships people have in their lives.”
